20TH KING'S CUP SEPAK TAKRAW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS

The 20th King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championship was held at Nimibutra Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand from December 15- 19, 2005. Twenty-one countries participated in the tournament. The USA Takraw Assocoation sent two men’s doubles teams and one hoop team to participate. Last year, the USA team was a champion in the doubles event in division 3, so this year the USA team moved up to division 2 which is a more advanced division.

There were six men's doubles teams in group A of division 2: Singapore A, USA A, Brazil A, India A, Korea A, and China A. In division 2 group B, there were seven teams: India B, USA B, China B, Brazil B, Singapore B, Korea B, and the Philippines. In the first round, the USA A team played against Brazil A. USA A team players, Kevin Miller and Victor Lumpongpoung, lost to Brazil A in two sets, 21:8 and 21: 10. Also in the first round, the USA B team played against China B. USA B team players, Eric Ducharme and Randy Dix, lost to China in two sets, 21: 7 and 21:8. After the two USA doubles teams lost, the USA team was out of the doubles game and had to wait for the hoop event. Tony Ontam got off the plane from California just in time for the hoop event. The USA team had five players for the hoop game: #1 Kevin Miller, #2 Eric Ducharme, #3 Randy Dix, #7 Tony Ontam, and #9 Victor Lumpongpoung. It was a great show by the USA team. They shot eleven balls into the hoop which hangs in the air 4.75 meters above the ground.

The tournament was great and the USA team showed good spirit at the farewell party and closing ceremony. The USA team would like to thank the ISTAF and all the organizers for organizing the tournament. The USA team was happy to meet with all of the Sepak Takraw players from around the world and keep in touch with the Sepak Takraw community. To introduce Sepak Takraw as an official Olympic sport, ISTAF (International Sepak Takraw Federation) is trying hard to encourage more countries to play Sepak Takraw, including the USA. More than 30 countries play Sepak Takraw right now. Takraw USA is trying to encourage more people to play and learn about the sport in the USA. There are annual tournaments in the USA in July in Minnesota and during the fall in California.

According to ISTAF, Sepak Takraw is becoming more popular in the world now. The game is one of the most popular sports besides soccer in Thailand, where the sport originated. In Thailand, the 3rd annual Takraw Thailand League  at the professional level is in progress from February 7 - July 10, 2004. There are 12 teams participating in the event. The next big Takraw events in Thailand after that was the Princess Cup in July and the Prince Cup in September. The biggest Takraw event in Thailand is the King's Cup World Championship.

In January, Tony, a Sacramento-based member of US SepakTakraw team, made a trip to Oakland, CA to meet with P.T., who plays Net Footbag there (see www.footbag.org ) In 2002 P.T. participated in a Sepak Takraw tournament in Oakland. Takraw players may be interested in playing Net Footbag because it is a similar sport to Sepak Takraw. In addition, some Footbag players may like to learn some spiking techniques that Takraw players use. It seems like a good idea for both Takraw and Footbag players to practice together in the future.

During the trip to Oakland, P.T. introduced Tony to a Takraw club in Oakland. Tony played Takraw with them and enjoyed meeting another active Takraw community in northern California. He and his friends will come back again to play Takraw with the Oakland Takraw club.Thank you again to P.T.!
